11/19/03 - Hilton Head Island, SC - - Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) has been named an Official Special Olympics North America Tennis Training Partner. This announcement solidifies their long standing relationship. For years, PTR has worked closely with Special Olympics. PTR certified professionals around the world host, participate in, and volunteer for a variety of Special Olympics events, from training sessions to tournaments.

The annual Special Olympics Southeast Region USA Tennis Championships is hosted by PTR at it's international headquarters on Hilton Head Island. PTR Foundation scholarships have been provided to attend teaching essentials and certification workshops have been provided to ensure Special Olympics Tennis Directors get the very best education available in the tennis industry. At the upcoming PTR International Tennis Symposium, more than 1,000 tennis teachers from around the world will be able to learn how to start a Special Olympics program in their area.

"Everyone involved in Special Olympics, from the athletes to the volunteers, is a winner," said Dennis Van der Meer, Founder and President of PTR "This is one of the most rewarding things I do. I recommend that all tennis teachers join me and participate in Special Olympics."

Greg Epperson, Sports Director Special Olympics North America, said, "Through the PTR, Special Olympics athletes and coaches are now accessing the highest levels of tennis training and competition. The support Dennis Van der Meer and the PTR staff has provided opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities to improve the quality of their lives through tennis."

PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 11,000 members in 124 countries It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and serving tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
