07/08/04 - Hilton Head Island, SC - The TIA announced today plans to have a event that will combine seminars, a tennis forum, over 40 industry awards, combined with a trade show for dealers, pros, manufacturers, local tennis organizations, and the press from January 17 - 19, 2005 in Orlando. The TIA Expo will be held in conjunction with the 2005 Super Show and will have many activities outside of the trade show.

Jim Baugh, President of TIA, explains how this decision came about. “The TIA and many of its largest members want to have an Event that rallies our industry and provides an opportunity to learn and to do business in an efficient way. We have studied many venues and concluded we can make The TIA Expo in Orlando a winner. We have a good softgoods foundation that planned to attend the Super Show already. Now, major racquet, other hard goods companies have committed to be part of this event. We have preliminary event plans which will be announced at a later date but we are excited to be able to launch programs, products, and other plans…at one time, at this event.”

Dave Haggerty, Chairman of the TIA further explains. “Our sport has to have a venue to be together. We are seeing the benefits of this with our Tennis Welcome Center Campaign. Plus, we are planning other initiatives…working together. The TIA Expo in Orlando allows us to come together, roll out plans, learn from each other, and sell some products.”

A long time industry critic, Gene Scott, also sees the value of this event. When I visited the Super Show in Orlando this past year, I said to myself, ‘the tennis industry can build on this…and make it so much more. Recent problems with the Show have been lack of visitors and expense. I believe there is a way to deal with both issues and our sport would be crazy not to help make this work.”

Baugh goes on the say why this event is so important. “My goals are to make this industry bigger…stronger. It will not happen with a fragmented approach. The TIA will make this Event work. Plus, will continue to have smaller meetings such as a TIA Forum at the US Open. We learned from our experiences in NY and while we will not have a show at the US Open, we know what works and what doesn’t. We will pull together the proper ingredients to make a TIA Event in Orlando a winner.”
