03/28/04 - Hilton Head Island, SC - - Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) was honored by Special Olympics South Carolina last night during the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics Southeast Region Tennis Championships held at Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club on Hilton Head Island. The award names PTR as the 2004 Outstanding Organization of the Year.

Sue Maner, of Special Olympics South Carolina, presented the award to Dan Santorum, PTR CEO. Santorum accepted it and noted that the event and the award were possible through to the generosity of Dennis and Pat Van der Meer and the dedicated efforts of PTR Vice President of Operations, Julie Jilly, and the entire PTR staff.

More than 175 Special Olympics athletes, representing 13 states and Italy, are competing in this year's championship tournament. PTR and Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club have hosted the event since its inception five years ago, when only 30 athletes participated.

PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 11,000 members in 124 countries It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and servicing tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
