08/28/05 - Wilson Racquet Sports, the No. 1 brand in tennis, is launching the first-ever comprehensive line of high performance rackets engineered and designed specifically for women. The W line combines Wilson’s industry-leading nCode technology with a new racket construction and distinct cosmetics in a series of nine rackets that hit retailers in October 2005.
Wilson debuted the new W line to more than 600 people including media, retailers and players at a private party in New York on Aug 27. The party included a stage show to showcase the W line with special guests Venus and Serena Williams, W spokesperson and retired top player Barbara Schett and a fashion show highlighting the new line.
The W line features Wilson’s exclusive nCode technology, which uses nano-sized silicon dioxide crystals to permeate the voids between carbon fibers in the frame resulting in added stability, strength and power. W rackets are engineered to enhance a woman’s game with a unique racket construction for increased power, strength and control and added comfort features.
W rackets are designed with a new, fluid, oval head shape with longer main strings for a larger sweet spot and a new throat design offering greater strength and stability. Other features include iso-zorb grommets for reduced shock, softer grip and a contoured butt cap, all which offer greater hand comfort.
“The W line represents a new concept for the industry by developing a line of rackets exclusively for women taking into account playability, performance, look and feel,” Brian Dillman, Vice President of Global Marketing for Wilson Racquet Sports, said. “We are the first company to address the needs of the athlete first and then take individual style as a very important criteria in selecting a racket.”
The W line is categorized into three headsizes to accommodate players based on their performance expectations. Each headsize offers a choice of rackets with distinct cosmetics that include vibrant colors and patterns.
Former #7 WTA ranked and fan favorite Barbara Schett is the spokesperson for the W line. Schett, 28, retired in 2005 after a remarkable 12-year career where she won three Tour singles and 10 doubles titles.
The W line also features accompanying accessories that correspond to the racket design including bags, visors, caps and trucker hats. In association with Wilson’s Hope line, for every purchase from the W line Wilson makes a donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
The W line will be available beginning in October at sporting good and tennis specialty stores nationwide. Price ranges from $199.99 to $269.99 (MSRP). For more info, www.wilsontennis.com.
