12/30/05 - The Tennis Industry Association (TIA) reported today the results of Late Season 2005 Retailer Trends and the results are very similar to the participation data that was published earlier this month. After seeing total participation growing by 1,000,000 players and frequent player growing by 10% in 2005, retailers are reporting growth in racquets, balls and footwear.
One hundred (100) key retailers in the USA report 2005 sales growth of 7.6% in racquets, 3.5% in balls, and 4.8% in footwear. These same retailers are projecting more growth in 2006 as well. Jim Baugh, TIA President explains some of the reasons for the results. “2005 has been a great year with many new, high tech racquets coming out from leading manufacturers. Dealers are also reporting they are seeing an increase in tennis participation. There no question in my mind the plans we put into place 2-3 years ago in the “Plan for Growth” are taking hold. We need to increase our plans to grow the game. When we grow our sport, everyone wins.”
