01/09/06 - Chicago—Wilson Racquet Sports has signed on as the title sponsor of "The Battle of the Paddles" a premiere platform event that will bring together the top players of both paddle and platform tennis to compete prior to The Midwestern Platform Tennis Tournament. The event will take place at Four Bridges Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio on January 12th at 7pm and will be televised by The Tennis Channel at a later date.
Paddle National Champions Scott Freedman and Don Schwake from Venice Beach, Calif. will compete for the first time ever on a platform tennis court against the duo of Bill Anderson and Flip Goodspeed. Freedman is Paddle Tennis premier player as a 19-time World Champion and currently holds all major titles in the sport. Schwake is ranked No. 2 in the world and is considered to be the sports next great player. On the Platform end, Anderson and Goodspeed have won over eight APTA National Championships. Anderson won his first National Championship last March with partner Mike Stulac, both of which currently hold the sports No. 1 ranking.
"It's great for fans to finally see both paddle sports come together for one great battle," Jason Gray, Four Bridges Director of Racquet Sports, said. With the help of Wilson Racquet Sports and other corporate sponsors, this exciting concept will soon become a reality for fans of both sports.”
"Wilson is pleased to support the grassroots effort created by Jason Gray that is bridging platform and paddle tennis from East to West," Jim Burda, Manager of US Racquet Promotions, said.
The tournament format will be 2 out of 3 sets and as a bonus Freedman & Schwake received a wild card into The Midwestern Platform Tennis Tournament. As a part of the agreement, a chosen Platform team will be granted a wild card into Paddle's US Open National Championships in late February in Las Vegas with a history making $100,000 total purse.
