03/09/06 - Hilton Head Island, SC – The seventh annual Special Olympics Tennis Championships Presented by PTR (Professional Tennis Registry) will be held March 13-15 at the Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

More than 135 Special Olympics athletes from nine states will compete in singles and doubles match play and individual skills events. During the tournament, PTR will conduct clinics which will allow Special Olympics volunteer coaches to improve their tennis teaching skills. PTR Executive Director, Dan Santorum, will also host a free clinic for Special Olympics Coaches. PTR’s Vice President of Operations, Julie Jilly, is the Tournament Director and part of the Games Management Team who is coordinating the tournament, clinics and other activities at the event.

The public is invited to watch the tournament and to enjoy the Opening Ceremony with Parade of Athletes and Exhibition Match on Monday at 6:30pm on Shipyard Racquet Club’s Center Court. The Closing Ceremony and Medals Presentation is also open to spectators. It will be held Wednesday afternoon at Shipyard Racquet Club.

Special Olympics is a training and competition sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The organization, founded in 1968, has grown to include more than a million athletes from over 150 countries competing in 23 different Olympic-type sports.

PTR is the Official Tennis Training Partner of Special Olympics. PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 12,000 members in 123 countries It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and servicing tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
