05/04/06 - New York, N.Y.–TENNIS Magazine, the world’s leading tennis publication, today announced the appointment of James Martin as Editor-in-Chief. He succeeds Mark Woodruff, who served as Editor-in-Chief from April 1998 until October 2004 when he became Editor-at-Large for the magazine. The announcement was made by Norb Garrett, Editorial Director for Miller Publishing Group, which owns the title.

Martin will be the sixth Editor-in-Chief in the 41-year history of TENNIS Magazine. He is currently a Senior Editor at the title and also Editor of SMASH, a quarterly magazine aimed at teen-aged players launched earlier this year by Miller Publishing Group. Martin, 34, joined TENNIS in 1998 with an extensive background in tennis journalism, including positions with TennisMatch Magazine and Tennis Industry (now Racquet Sports Industry), a trade publication.

“James brings a real passion for the game and a deep appreciation for the vital role TENNIS Magazine plays in the community,” said Garrett. “He has great vision and will be integral to our continued expansion of both TENNIS and SMASH magazines’ footprint into areas such as online media, mobile media and other developing forms of media and brand extensions.”

Woodruff will continue with the magazine in his capacity as Editor-at-Large through June, after which time his role will be further determined.

“Mark has done a terrific job guiding TENNIS during these past six years, and has left a terrific legacy not just for the publication but for the sport,” Garrett said.

A summa cum laude graduate of Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn., with a BA in political science, Martin has played tennis since junior high school, achieving a Top 30 USTA sectional ranking as a teen-ager. He currently plays at least twice a week, as an NTRP 5.0, in Fairfield, where he lives with his wife and two children.
