11/29/06 - London, United Kingdom – The ATP, governing body of the men’s professional tennis circuit, today announced that U.K. sports executive Andy Anson has been named CEO, ATP Europe. Anson, 42, comes to the ATP with an extensive background in sports marketing and branding, including successful tenures with Manchester United and The Walt Disney Company.
Anson currently serves as Commercial Director of Manchester United, a role that includes oversight of all the club’s commercial activities including sponsorship, marketing, merchandising, media and international business development. He has overseen a significant increase in the club’s commercial revenues since joining the organization in 2004 with deals including the £56.5 million AIG shirt sponsorship – a record in British football.
“We are extremely privileged to have someone of Andy’s background, experience and skill set joining the ATP,” said Etienne de Villiers, ATP Executive Chairman and President. “He brings a wealth of commercial, branding, and sport-based experience as well as a real understanding of the current media landscape.”
Said Anson: “There is a strong history of tennis in Europe and this region is vitally important to the future of the game. These are very exciting times for tennis. Etienne and the ATP Board are working hard to enhance the excitement and value of ATP tournaments, and I look forward to enabling the European ATP events to grow and develop as premier sporting properties in this region.”
Previous to joining Manchester United, Anson was a partner at OC&C Strategy Consultants with responsibility for the international media and entertainment practice and had successful spells at Channel 4 Television in the U.K. and with The Walt Disney Company in Burbank, California.
Anson graduated with a degree in Mathematics from Oxford University and received his MBA at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. He will assume his position with the ATP in April and will replace outgoing CEO Horst Klosterkemper, who has overseen the European region since 2004.
Note to Editors: A Q&A with Anson will be available shortly on ATPtennis.com.
