09/22/06 - Hilton Head Island, S.C.– Several awards were presented during the PTR/ROHO $17,500 Wheelchair Tennis Championships, held September 20-24 at PTR (Professional Tennis Registry) Headquarters. The presentations were made at the Crowne Plaza Resort on Friday, September 22, during the annual ROHO Awards Banquet.
Harlon Matthews, of McDonough, Georgia, received PTR’s Wheelchair Pro of the Year Award. Matthews, a PTR Certified Tennis Instructor, has a deep passion for tennis, both as a competitor and as a teacher. He teaches tennis to both wheelchair and able-bodied students of the game at at Henry County Parks & Recreation. No stranger to awards, in 2005 alone, Matthews earned the USTA Georgia Wheelchair Tennis Player of the Year, the Georgia Professional Tennis Association’s Player of the Year and PTR’s Golden Eagle Award for Service to the Game. The GPTA and PTR awards are particularly special to Mathews because they are not wheelchair specific and are awarded by other tennis teaching professionals.
This year’s PTR’s Golden Eagle Award for Service to the Game was presented to Kelly Skelton, of Wartrace, Tennessee. Skelton is the Director of the Middle Tennessee State University Program. As a special recognition, Sports Tutor gave Skelton a Tennis Tutor ball throwing machine to help continue with her tennis programs.
Each year, the tournament players and the umpires vote on which player receives the Sportsmanship Award. This award is presented to the player who demonstrates the highest level of sportsmanship during the tournament. This year’s recipient was Tim Wall, of Brooklet, Georgia. Honorable Mentions for Sportsmanship during this event went to: Eddie Hawkins, of Asheville, North Carolina, Tom Johnson, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Karin Korb, of Atlanta, Georgia, and Patrick Mulvihill, of Biloxi, Mississippi.
PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 12,000 members in 123 countries. It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and servicing tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
