02/16/07 - Newport, RI--The International Tennis Hall of Fame has announced an open call for nominations for the induction Class of 2008. The International Tennis Hall of Fame recognizes and honors both athletes and contributors connected to the sport of tennis.

New this year, nominations can now be submitted online at www.tennisfame.com. Printable nomination forms are also available online, while nomination forms may also be obtained by directly contacting the International Tennis Hall of Fame, 194 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI 02840 / Phone: 401-849-3990 / Fax: 401-849-8780 / Email: newport@tennisfame.com.

Players are elected based on a distinguished record of competitive achievement at the highest international level, with consideration given to integrity, sportsmanship and character. The International Tennis Hall of Fame has two categories for players. The Recent Player category is for those who were active in the sport within the last 20 years, but not a significant factor on the ATP (Men’s) or WTA (Women’s) Tour within the last five years. The Master Player category is for those players that have been retired from the sport for at least 20 years.

In addition, a Contributor category recognizes administrators, coaches, officials and members of the media, whose exceptional contributions have furthered the growth, reputation and character of the sport. Nominees in the Contributor category do not need to be retired from their activities related to the sport.

All nominations will be reviewed by the Hall of Fame’s Eligibility Committee to determine those who have met the minimum criteria for induction. Nominations must be received on or before April 1, 2007 for induction eligibility in 2008. The ballot for 2008 induction will be announced during this year’s US Open, and those elected by the Hall of Fame’s voting panels will be announced early next year. The official induction ceremony will take place in July 2008 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.

This year’s Hall of Fame Class of 2007 will honor Pete Sampras, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Sven Davidson and Russ Adams. The 2007 Induction Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, July 14.

Established in 1954, the International Tennis Hall of Fame is a non-profit institution dedicated to preserving the history of tennis, inspiring and encouraging junior tennis development, enshrining tennis heroes and heroines, and providing a landmark for tennis enthusiasts worldwide. The International Tennis Hall of Fame was recognized as the sport’s official Hall of Fame in 1986 by the International Tennis Federation, the governing body of tennis.
