02/26/07 - Hilton Head Island, SC - - Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) named two new Master Professionals at its annual Awards Banquet held February 19, 2007, during the 2007 PTR International Tennis Symposium. The event, which includes 50-plus presentations, a tennis trade show and $25,000 Championships is being held February 17-14, 2007, at Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

PTR established the Master Professional level of certification to recognize those individuals who have made significant contributions to the game of tennis throughout their careers. The designation of Master Professional is an important distinction in which PTR members must demonstrate their broad involvement in tennis over many years. They have shown growth in their knowledge of the game, a strong involvement in introducing tennis to their community, expertise in teaching and coaching and a commitment to developing professionally. PTR Master Professionals are a strong representative of the sport and display the highest standards in the tennis teaching profession.

Roy Barth, Director of Tennis of Kiawah Island Resort, in Kiawah, South Carolina and Alex Rossi, Director of Tennis at Club Los Leones, in Santiago, Chile, joined 25 others who have earned the PTR Master Professional designation.

A PTR Professional for more than two decades, Roy Barth has been the Director of Tennis at Kiawah Island Resort outside Charleston, South Carolina, for 31 years. Recently, the tennis facility at the upscale resort was renamed the Roy Barth Tennis Center. In 1973, Roy was one of the original 32 Founding Fathers of the ATP and he competed at Wimbledon five times, the US Open nine times, as well as the French and Australian Opens and other major tournaments. Roy reached the world Top 40 in Singles with wins over Tom Oker, Bob Lutz and Pancho Gonzales to name a few, and reached #2 in USA Men’s Doubles, with wins over Arthur Ashe and Dennis Ralston. His service to the USTA has been non-stop since the early 80’s, and includes stints as President of USTA South Carolina and Committee Chair at the state, section and national levels, and most recently Vice Chairman of the Davis Cup Committee. His family was named USTA Southern and USTA National Family of the Year. He has written articles that have been published in Tennis and TennisPro.

Alex Rossi joined PTR in 1995, and is a PTR Clinician and Tester. He is one of only a few people who can say that a young player they helped develop made it to #1 in the world! Alex coached Marcel Rios from the age of 13 to 16. Originally from Tucuman, Argentina, he started his career at Tucuman Lawn Tennis club. Alex has been teaching and coaching tennis for over 25 years. He worked in the Patricio Apey Tennis Academy in Miami, Florida, and was the Tennis Director of Hans Gildemeister Tennis Academy in Santiago, Chile. In addition, he has coached and taken many juniors and ATP and WTA Tour players to all the major tournaments and Grand Slams and captained the juniors Chilean Tennis Teams to many international tournaments. He was responsible for the early development of players such as Marcel Rios, Fernando Gonzalez, Gabriel Silberstein, Mercedes Paz, Bettina Fulco and others. He was highly recommended for the Master Professional rating from many players and Davis Cup Captain, Hans Gildemeister. Currently, Alex is Director of Tennis at Club de Golf Los Leones, the most prestigious facility in Santiago, with many teaching pros working under him. He has conducted many PTR workshops in Chile in the past six years, and has been a frequent speaker at international tennis conventions and symposia. Alex has had many articles published in a variety of tennis magazines.

PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 12,000 members in 126 countries. It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and servicing tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
