08/22/08 - Andover, MA –The USTA is busy sprucing up the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in preparation for the 2008 US Open and for the 31st consecutive year, the world-renowned tournament has selected DecoTurf cushioned tennis courts.
The US Open was originally played on grass until Forest Hills switched to clay courts in 1975. In 1978, the event moved from Forest Hills to its current home in Flushing Meadows, where the surface changed again to its current full cushion Pro DecoTurf courts.
DecoTurf is selected year after year because the DecoTurf tennis court surface is well suited to many different players and styles.
ESPN.com stated that "..the U.S. Open puts competitors on equal footing. Literally. The tournament's DecoTurf II playing surface caters to heavy hitters and speedy scramblers alike."
In September’s Tennis.com, Brad Gilbert declared “the surface at the US Open to be the most equalizing of all the majors. You do not need to adjust your game to be effective. Net-rushers, counter-punchers, and big hitters all thrive at the Open.”
USA Today in it’s article titled “Favorite Surface” said, "It suits a lot of players. It yields truer bounces that don't sit up too high or stay too low. It's just a fair surface."
And the New York Times commented, "The hardcourt of choice is the Pro DecoTurf system. This surface is selected for its consistency, ease of maintenance and durability. It also offers the ability to control the courts' footing and ball speed."
”DecoTurf is honored to be the tennis surface for this Grand Slam Tournament,” said John Graham Managing Director of DecoTurf. “We are very pleased to working with American Sports Technologies of New York, who installed the DecoTurf courts.”
DecoTurf's multi-layer cushion tennis surface has been selected for use at the world's most prestigious events including the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, Davis Cup and Fed Cup matches, and at many of the finest facilities around the world. DecoTurf tennis surfaces are Court Pace Classified by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). DecoTurf has authorized applicators around the globe that are trained to install the surface that is known for its consistent speed of play, true ball bounce, durability, low maintenance, vibrant long lasting colors, and overall customer value.
