07/20/08 - In 1881 the International Tennis Hall of Fame was the host to the first US National Championships. Today, after the completion of a five-year, $7.5 million renovation and endowment project, the Hall of Fame is one of the finest tennis facilities in the country. It features a historic museum, which encompasses over 20,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, momentous videos, and popular memorabilia of tennis champions past and present; 13 grass courts; America's only competitive grass courts which are open to the public for play from May through September; one clay court; and three indoor award-winning indoor hard courts.
Tennis Welcome Centers are an industry wide initiative to encourage more people to begin playing tennis. One can find TWC’s at neighborhood parks, commercial tennis clubs, health clubs, resorts, high schools, and college. Each facility offers outstanding introductory tennis programs where people can learn to play tennis fast, get a good workout, meet new people, and have a great time.
"The International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum is honored to be named the Tennis Welcome Center of the Month from the Tennis Industry Association and the U.S. Tennis Association," says Mark L. Stenning, the Hall of Fame’s Chief Executive Officer. "We are proud to partner with the TIA and USTA to be a part of this program, which is so important in bringing more people into the game and growing tennis overall."
The International Tennis Hall of Fame, which became a TWC in 2005, has approximately 300 outdoor members and 550 indoor members. It hosts a variety of clinics and tournaments year-round for juniors and adults of all ages. It is also home to the ATP’s Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships and the Hall of Fame Champions Cup, a tournament that features legends of the game in a highly competitive, fan-friendly, round-robin format.
“The International Tennis Hall of Fame is such a unique facility,” says Bill Rompf, Vice President and Director of Tennis. “It is truly distinguished from other sports museums because tennis is still played on the grounds and virtually every historic champion has graced the courts.”
The Tennis Industry Association, the not-for-profit trade association for tennis, is THE unifying force in the tennis industry whose mission is to promote the growth and economic vitality of tennis by working closely with the USTA and industry partners to develop and implement initiatives to increase tennis participation. Core TIA activities include TIA/USTA Tennis Health Index, Consumer and Trade Research, Growing Tennis System including Tennis Welcome Centers, Cardio Tennis, 50-50 Co-op Program, Quickstart Tennis and TennisConnect.org.
