06/17/08 - The United States Professional Tennis Association received an award of distinction in the 2008 Communicator Awards competition. The winning entry was a feature article published in the August 2007 issue of ADDvantage magazine titled “Shelton enjoys ‘the process’ that led to picture-perfect win.”

The article recounts how Bryan Shelton, USPTA Professional and coach of the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team, helped transform his struggling squad into NCAA champions. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named Shelton the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year the same day his Cinderella team won the national championship.

Jill Phipps, USPTA staff writer, authored the article for ADDvantage, which is published 11 times a year by the USPTA for men and women tennis-teaching professionals. It features messages and topics of interest from USPTA CEO Tim Heckler and board members, tips from tennis-teaching professionals, tennis drills, news on the latest events, member and division news, career development opportunities, player development inserts, articles on tennis teaching and much more.

The award of distinction recognizes projects that exceed industry standards in quality and excellence. With entries judged on a 10-point scale, distinction winners generally receive a score of 7.0 to 8.9 and excellence award winners receive a score of 9.0 or above.

With more than 9,000 entries from across the United States and around the world, the Communicator Awards is the largest and most competitive awards program honoring creative excellence on the part of communications professionals. The four overall areas of competition in this 14th annual contest were audio, video, print (which USPTA entered), and interactive. Participating organizations included ad agencies, production firms, graphic designers, design firms and public relations firms.

The Communicator Awards, for the first time, were judged and overseen by the International Academy of the Visual Arts. The more than 200 IAVA members include executives from organizations such as Alloy, Brandweek, Coach, Disney, The Ellen Degeneres Show, Estee Lauder, Fry Hammond Barr, HBO, Monster.com, MTV, Polo Ralph Lauren, Sotheby’s Institute of Art, Victoria’s Secret, Wired, and Yahoo!
