PBZ Zagreb Indoors
HEAD Player Sergiy Stakhovsky, of the Ukraine, won his first career ATP singles title at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors. He defeated fellow HEAD player Ivan Ljubicic, of Croatia, 7-5, 6-4 in the final.
Stakhovsky was the “lucky loser”, falling in earlier qualification rounds, but got a second chance in the main draw. On the way to the final, he beat second seed Ivo Karlovic, of Croatia and fellow HEAD player Simon Bolelli, of Italy, who made it to the semifinals. Stakhovsky plays with a MicroGEL Prestige MP and Ljubicic plays with a MicroGEL Extreme Pro.
Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, Memphis
In singles action, HEAD player Robin Soderling, of Sweden, reached the finals against Stave Darcis, but fell to the unseeded player from Belgium, 6-3, 7-6(5) at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. Soderling plays with a MicroGEL Radical MP.
In doubles, top seeds HEAD player Mark Knowles of the Bahamas and partner Mahesh Bhupathi of India captured their first ATP title together as they defeated Thai twins Sanchai and Sonchat Ratiwatana, both of Thailand, 7-6(5), 6-2. Knowles, who plays with a MicroGel Prestige MP, and partner Bhupathi, didn't drop a set in four matches. This was the 10th career tournament playing together (13-9 record). It was Knowles' 48th career win.
Abierto Mexicano Telcel, Acapulco
HEAD player Jose Acasuso, of Argentina, reached the semifinals in Acapulco and lost against eventual winner Nicolas Almagro, of Spain, in three very close sets. Acasuso plays with a FXP Prestige Mid.
In doubles, HEAD player Agustin Calleri, of Argentina, reached the finals with partner Luis Horna, of Peru, to second seeds Oliver Marach of Austria and Michal Mertinak of Slovakia in the tie break of the third set. Calleri plays with a MicroGEL Prestige Mid.
Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships
HEAD player Svetlana Kuznetsova, of Russia, reached the finals of Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships, falling to eighth-seed Elena Dementieva, of Russia, 4-6,6-3,6-2. Along the way, Kuznetsova, who plays with a MicroGEL Extreme, defeated Serbian Jelena Jankovic in the semifinals.
Abierto Mexicano, Acapulco
HEAD player and No. 2 seed Alize Cornet, of France, advanced to her first WTA final at the Abierto Mexicano in Acapulco. She defeated Jill Craybas, of the United States, to reach the finals and lost in three close sets against Italian Flavia Pennetta.
Cornet, 18, who plays with a FXP Radical MP, had never passed a WTA quarterfinals until this week.
