10/16/08 - USTA Florida was honored at the 59th Annual Conference of the Florida Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance and Sport (FAHPERDS), Oct. 3-4. The organization was nominated by Valerie Harville of Brevard County Schools for the FAHPERDS Community Service Award, which recognizes an organization, individual or media group for contributions and service to health and wellness issues related to FAHPERDS disciplines. Conference Program Director and FAHPERDS board member, Dr. Hollie Newman, officially presented USTA Florida with the statewide Community Service Award at the conference.

USTA Florida has been a continuing partner and sponsor at FAHPERDS state conference for eight years. The organization has had a strong commitment to the growth and promotion of tennis for people of all ages and gender.

Within the last year, USTA Florida has built credible statewide relationships with school district administrators, which has led to a tremendous increase in tennis opportunities for students in school, after school and during PE classes. These partnerships have expanded the reach of USTA Florida in promoting the sport of tennis while supporting FAHPERDS mission to enhance the areas of health, physical education, recreation and sport to people statewide.

“USTA Florida is honored and privileged to have a long-standing relationship with FAHPERDS and appreciate all the help their members have done to help us promote and develop tennis through their organization that eventually reach down to the children,” said Andy McFarland, Associate Executive Director, USTA Florida. “To receive such a highly merited award is certainly a symbol of respect and support and we look forward to our future together.”

USTA Florida’s former Schools Coordinator, John MacDonald, accepted the award on behalf of the entire organization. Both MacDonald and McFarland, along with USTA Florida staff and volunteers throughout Florida, have worked hard to preserve the legacy of service to and cooperation with FAHPERDS.

“We appreciate our excellent relationship with FAHPERDS and PE teachers all over the state and USTA Florida hopes to maintain and even expand that relationship in the coming years," MacDonald said.
