09/18/08 - Mitchell Krueger of Aledo, Texas, is one of the 10 finalists for SI Kid of The Year. He is the only tennis player to be in this select group of youth athletes and needs on-line votes to secure his spot into the Top 6. Voting is currently taking place online at http://sikids.com. Voting closes at noon on September 22.
The 2008 winner will be featured exclusively on the cover of the December special double issue of SI KIDS. This marks the first time an award-winner adorns the cover of the magazine as a result of reader voting. Further, the SPORTS KID OF THE YEAR will be honored at SI’s annual SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR award celebration held in New York City later this year.
Fourteen-year old Krueger is ranked No. 5 in the Nation in Boys 14 & Under. He is on the National High Performance USTA team and is currently in Spain playing for the Junior United States Davis Cup Team. He trains at TbarM in Dallas,Texas under the direction of his coach Dave Licker. Krueger was featured as one of four boys in the documentary “50,000 Balls” which chronicles the trials, tribulations, and rewards of the boys 12 and under USTA circuit. The documentary recently screened at the Newport International Film festival. Krueger was also one of only four boys selected to serve as an Inaugural Ambassador for Kids Play For Good (KPFG). KPFG is an organization dedicated to building and fostering the power of philanthropy by encouraging young athletes to utilize their talents in the sport they love to raise funds for a cause/charity they have selected. Mitchell chose to support Susan G. Komen For The Cure and he lead a Rally For The Cure tennis tournament at the TbarM club. He also participates in community service through Special Olympics.

Krueger is an excellent representation of an elite tennis player who gives back to his community. To have him on the cover of SI Kids would not only help promote tennis to the youth of this country but give youth athletes nation-wide a positive role model.

“I feel I can be a role model for other kids through my tennis on and off the court. Younger kids look up to me and it is important that I show them that tennis can be a demanding and frustrating sport sometimes but also a very rewarding one,” says Krueger. “If I can use my talents to help someone have a better life then I feel that is more important than any win. This summer when participating in tennis Special Olympics, it was rewarding to see a special need person having such a good time on the tennis court. It made me feel happy to be able to make them smile.”
